HARMONIUM

Harmonium or surpeti is a musical instrument made of wood, metal, brass, and cloth. Wooden music boxes come from West Bengal. The harmonium has become an integral part of Indian classical music. It is widely used in composing folk, classical, Sufi and Ghazal music.

This dying instrument has become popular again in India. In 1875 Dwarkanat Ghos designed his version of the harmonium in Calcutta. Traditionally, it was used to accompany Indian classical musicians when they sat on the floor during performances. and was easy to repair. Drone knobs were added to the instrument to create Indian classical music harmonies. The Indian version of the harmonium also added the technique of changing the scale. By 1915 India had become a major manufacturer of harmoniums.
